Task 1 - Reading Enrichment Unit
Developing an early love for reading is a trait that will benefit students throughout their entire academic career. Media specialists can foster this love for reading in students by providing them with high-quality, up-to-date materials, organizing book talks, matching reading materials with student interests, and providing reading materials in multiple formats including digital forms. Media specialists should stay current on trends in young adult and children’s literature so that they can provide the best possible service to their students.
As part of my Practicum, I developed a Reading Enrichment Unit for second-grade class. Since we were so close to Halloween I decided to build the unit around pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns. We read a couple of non-fiction books on the topic, discussed them, completed an activity associated with the book, and then on the last day they were able to carve their own jack-o-lantern online. I designed this unit in a way to show students that they could read about a topic then extend the knowledge they gained through reading by discussing what they have read with others and discovering web resources as well.
