This week has been super intense. I have had a lot going on in my own learning commons but I have also been working on practicum stuff as well. I have been doing 3 classes a day in my LC but also working on getting stuff ready and catching up on notes that I haven't typed in yet. I try to sit down and write reflections on tasks but then my MS responsibilities kick in and I have to lay it to the side.
I did get a chance to visit Shannon Moore at Harlem Middle School. She is the Media Specialist. This is her second year at HMS. I was able to talk with her about her duties there as well as look around at some of the different areas they have. Over the last few years, she said she was able to do several PD opportunities for the school. She usually tries to schedule at least once every 9 weeks and bases them off conversations she has with teachers or by sending out a questionnaire.
She said that right now she is mostly the gatherer of data and flows that down to teachers and students. She is the one directly in charge of Data Director (the school's benchmark testing software) and scans in and makes reports of the student data for the teachers. She also sets the students and staff up with Google Suites passwords and accounts. The county also has student accounts for Office 365 so she maintains those accounts for HMS as well.
Each grade level, 6-8th, have their own computer lab. She also controls the use of 3 computer carts. Mostly the students only come in to check out books or reference material but if they need any assistance with how or where to research Mrs. Moore is the one who guides them. She also said that even though the technology is there to provide an electronic calendar for teachers to sign up for computer lab time, she found they didn't know how to use it and instead just uses paper calendars for sign up. It sounds like a good PD opportunity to me ;). Some of the previous PD that she conducted were on Mirror360 and the use of some new short-throw LED projectors they are using in classes.
This week I also spoke with my admin about teaching the face to face PD for my portfolio. I do currently offer training on different technology through “Tech Tuesdays”. I am also leading a cohort of teachers doing a county Google initiative. It is called Level Up and they are trying to learn G Suite so they can take the Level 1 Certified Educator test. I am Level 2 as well as working on my Google Trainer Certification so it helps us both out. In that cohort, I have about 25 teachers. My district is having a PD day for teachers on October 15th. Students are out for Fall break with a 4 day weekend. Mrs. Aycock, my principal, has put me on the calendar for this day to teach how to use google forms for quizzes. This is open to the all the elementary teachers in our district to come. This face to face PD will be good since most of the teachers are still trying to figure out how to work with G Suite.
